Riddle me this: What has been in your home for most of your life and will be illegal in the future?
The answer was in the title, it’s R-22. When people hear the word R-22 they think of an evil robot that’s taking over the world. Rest assure it is not; however, it is just as destructive to the environment. I will address the various questions many of you will have in the 10 years to come.
What is R-22 Refrigerant?
R-22 is refrigerant that goes into your air conditioning unit and the refrigerant is what transforms the warm air to cool air. Without refrigerant, the air conditioner would just push out room temperature air and distribute it around your house; the air would not be cool. Next thing you know your family is upset with you and your running your mother in law to the hospital for possible heat stroke. Not exactly how you should be spending your day.
Who uses it?
Everyone who purchased an air conditioning unit before the year 2010, is most likely using R-22. This includes: Babies, children, dogs, cats, elderly, adults, the spiders in your home and even your rebellious teenagers. To find out if you have a unit that is using R-22 you ask your spouse to read the name plate on the unit or we can send a trained technician to check out your air conditioning unit. Whatever will make your life easier. Call 619-894-8709 to schedule your appointment.
Why is R-22 refrigerant being phased out?
This will be a frequently asked question among homeowners and commercial property owners for the next 10 years. R-22 is being phased out because it is aiding in the depletion of the ozone. By 2020 the manufactures will not be producing or distributing R-22.
What will the phase out consist of?
Extremely high prices in the next 3 years. R-22 will be in demand because manufactures won’t be producing it as much, then by 2020 you won’t be able to get your hands on it all unless you are planning a nice, jail vacation for some smuggled R-22 (I don’t recommend this).
What should you do if your unit uses R-22:
If your unit is under 10 years you may want to ride it out till your air conditioner needs refrigerant. Once it requires R-22 refrigerant you should do some price shopping. You may find the price to get the R-22 may be as high as a down payment on a new, environmentally safe air conditioner; you will need to weigh your options. If your unit is 10 years or older, it is time to start saving up for a new air conditioning unit. Keep in mind there are programs out there that can help you with financing and as 2020 approaches there will be triple the offers to choose from. Ygrene is one of the companies that can assist you with financing for your environment safe unit.
